Crowned At Last
Adverse weather conditions, illness and competition fixtures, all conspired to delay George Dolan in receiving his Wrexham Fencing Club, Leon Paul Junior Series Fencer of the Year 2009 award. Last Friday (19th February 2010), George was finally presented with his trophy, by Wrexham Fencing Club Head Coach, Mike Norfolk.

Competing in the Under 11 Boy’s foil series last year, George won two competitions outright and finished 2nd in two others. He finished with a total score of 96, which was identical to that achieved by Bethany Ellis. Therefore the two foilists shared the inaugural award.
George is one of the most promising young male foilists coming through the Welsh ranks and he will be striving to make an impression on this year’s Leon Paul Junior Series, having gone up an age group into the Under 13 category. Next weekend sees him trying to qualify for the British Youth Championships, through the qualifiers in Cardiff. Wrexham Fencing Club, wish George and all the other members competing in the qualifiers the best of luck.
Wrexham Fencing Club will again be running the Leon Paul Series Fencer of the Year Award, this season. All of our younger fencers should be looking at entering as many of the series as they can this year. As well as the prizes offered by Leon Paul, Wrexham will also be recognising the winner of our own table topper, with a trophy.
Each Leon Paul event gives a fencer a maximum of 25 points, with the points decreasing depending on where you finish in the competition. A maximum of 4 different event points, count towards the end of season score. The Wrexham fencer with the most points wins the club award. It doesn’t matter what weapon, age or gender. It’s an equal playing field for all. With the Leon Paul Junior Series already up and running this season, the sooner you start entering the sooner you will begin to obtain your points.
Even if you don’t do as well as you would like to, you are sure to meet new friends and experience some great times and visit lots of new places. Go on give it a try; you never know what it might lead to.
Good luck and happy fencing.
