Wrexham Fencing Club have again been featured in this months ‘Inside Welsh Sport Magazine’. The magazine editor has been so impressed by the success of the club, that he has asked the club be a ‘regular contributor’ to the monthly magazine. Wales sent over an inexperienced team to Belfast for the Senior 5 Nations International Championships this weekend. Several of the regular Welsh Team were otherwise engaged on various fencing duties, but their absence gave the Welsh Team Manager, Mark Nelson-Griffiths, scope to blood some new talent. Amongst the newcomers were Wrexham Fencing Club’s own David Gregory, Ben Roberts and Stephanie Collister. They joined seasoned Internationals Lydia Johnson and Carolyn Benson to give the Welsh Team a Wrexham flavour. (There are a total of 5 pictures and they will change after a few seconds). (more…)

The inaugurate staging of The Manchester Youth Foil competition took place on Saturday (21/11/09), and Wrexham Fencing Club members ensured that they returned home with more than their fair share of medals. In what was a very well run competition, our members were joined by fencing friends from Mold and Chester, and were all kept on their toes, under the helpful and watchful eyes of Wrexham coach, Valerijs Scipanovs and Welsh National coach John Hunt. Of the 6 short listed Wrexham Fencing Club nominations, for the Wrexham County Borough Council sports awards evening on Friday 13th November 2009, Ben Roberts was the sole winner, scooping The Junior Sports Personality of the Year Award. The 5 other nominations missed out narrowly in what was a very high standard of short listed clubs. (There are two pictures in the above slideshow which will change after a few seconds). (more…)
Missing from The Welsh Open was Stephanie Collister. Steph made the long trip to Salzburg, Austria competing for Great Britain in a cadet tournament. This was the second of a possible 4 European trips and with competitions running out to obtain points for her cadet ranking position, it was imperative that she secured a point scoring finish. Wales’s premier fencing competition was held over last weekend (Saturday 14 – Sunday 15th November 2009). The Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff hosted the The Welsh Open and most of Great Britain’s top fencers, along with a few high flyers from abroad, attended to try and scoop the top prizes from this ranking event. Several members from Wrexham Fencing Club entered, and the star performers were David Gregory and Carolyn Benson. The Commonwealth Baton is presently making it’s way through the Principality and was in Wrexham today (Monday 9th November 2009). Wrexham Fencing Club were invited to provide a ‘Baton Carrier’ by Wrexham Borough Council, and that privilege was bestowed upon Carolyn Benson.
