Shropshire open 1stAfter wins at the Merseyside and Wrexham Opens last season, Wrexham Fencing Club’s very own golden girl has struck early this season. Lydia Johnson entered the Shropshire Open this weekend and brought home with her the ultimate prize from the women’s foil competition. Once again The Manchester International Cadet Tournament attracted all the top cadet (under 17) fencers from Great Britain. In addition to the home shore entrants, there was a sprinkling of French and German competitors, just to enhance the ‘flavour’ of the event.   (more…)

The Bristol Open this weekend (19th and 20th September 2009) was the first major senior fencing competition of the new season. Most of Great Britain’s top fencers entered the open, all hoping to start the season off on the right foot. With the senior Commonwealth Championships pencilled in for this time next year, the entry numbers for the Bristol Open were up. Selection for the Commonwealths will be taken from the senior ranking lists and everyone was out to earn those valuable ranking points. The Welsh Veteran Team finished in a commendable 4th place, at last weekend’s Veteran’s Winton Cup. The event, which was held over the weekend of the 12th and 13th September at the Lilleshall Sports Complex, Shropshire, attracted 9 regions in total from Great Britain. Wrexham Fencing Club’s fencers helped their Welsh Team to its highest finishing position in recent years. (more…)

Wrexham Fencing Club has opened its doors for the new season. There’s no excuse for our members not to come along to burn off those holiday ice creams, and get straight back into your fitness and social routine. The start of the new season began with the end of season internal club competition. As you are aware this competition was supposed to have been held in July, but due to flooding it was postponed until last Friday.  The Wrexham Fencing Club, fencer of the year winners were announced at club night on Friday. After giving all the club’s members the opportunity to vote for their choice, Peter Morris won the senior award and Daniel Lumb scooped the junior prize.

After the summer break, it was straight into meaningful competition for some of Wrexham’s junior and cadet foilists this weekend (12th and 13thSeptember 2009). On Saturday Carolyn Benson, Stephanie Collister and Cassandra Eades travelled to the Capital to enter the British Selection Circuit Junior event, held in Newham. Sunday was the turn of Ben Roberts to attempt to earn valuable ranking points. (more…)
