Under the guidance of Valerijs Schipanovs, several of Wrexham’s senior and junior members all gained medals at the First Chester Intermediate Open 2010 this weekend.
Easter was not a time for several of Wrexham Fencing Club’s members to be filling their stomachs with chocolate. Instead they were engaged in meaningful competitive fencing. The Birmingham International Open provided the last opportunity for Welsh fencers to gain ranking points before the forthcoming Commonwealth Games selection. Due to take place in September and October later this year, the lure of securing additional points for the Melbourne venue far outweighed the pleasures of chocolate eating.
Several of Wrexham’s up and coming top boy foilists made the trip over to Poland at the weekend. A very well run competition in Wroclaw “Challenge Wratislavia” Poland, with 1773 fencers attending from 187 clubs and 48 countries, there were 6003 fights.
Wrexham Fencing Club members Amy Broadbent and David Charles-Hendy, along wtih former club member Simon Hedges, all entered the first Liverpool Intermediate Foil competition and came away with gold, silver and bronze.
Fighting under the Salle Scipanovs banner, Wrexham Fencing Club members David Charles-Hendy and Kristofers Scipanovs won through to the British Youth Foil Finals in their North West Regional qualifiers. The finals are due to be held over the May Bank Holiday at The English Institute Of Sport in Sheffield.
As the younger and older members of Wrexham Fencing Club were trying to cover themselves in glory at different fencing locations this weekend, several of our top fencers set their sights on success at The Nottingham Open.
In what was an incredibly busy weekend, Wrexham Fencing Club was competing all over the country, across three age ranges in three different competitions.
A very positive spirit was shown by the young fencers from Wrexham, Mold and Abergele when they competed at the BYC’s last weekend in Cardiff. (more…)
